Bipasha Basu is an Indian film actress who works predominantly in Bollywood films, apart from one film each in Bengali, Tamil and Telugu. After a successful stint in modeling, she made her film debut with a supporting role in ''Ajnabee'' (2001) which won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She then appeared as one of the female leads of Mahesh Babu in the Telugu film ''Takkari Donga'' (2002). The same year she appeared in her first full-fledged leading role in the supernatural thriller ''Raaz'' directed by Vikram Bhatt. Her performance in the film won positive reviews and a Best Actress nomination at the 48th Filmfare Awards. Basu was next seen in a supporting role in Sanjay Gadhvi's ''Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai'', and ''Chor Machaaye Shor''. The former was a moderate success while the latter was a commercial failure. In her first major release of 2003 ''Jism'', she played a seductress who develops an extramarital affair and plots to kill her husband. Her performance received critical acclaim and was bestowed with a Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role nomination.
Basu had four film releases in 2004, all of which performed moderately at the box-office and received mixed reviews. Her releases include a second-time collaboration with Bhatt in ''Aetbaar'', ''Rudraksh'', and ''Madhoshi'', which was well received.〔 The following year, her releases include the love triangle ''Barsaat'' alongside Bobby Deol and Priyanka Chopra, Prakash Jha's crime drama ''Apaharan''. She was next seen in the multi-starrer ''No Entry'' for which she received a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination. The film emerged as the biggest blockbuster of the year grossing at the box office. Her role in ''Corporate'' (2006) won numerous accolades including a Bollywood Movie Award – Best Actress and GIFA Best Actress Award. Basu played a cameo in Vishal Bhardwaj's ''Omkara'' (2006), an adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy ''Othello''. In the film she enacted the Bianca character. The same year she was seen in dual roles in Gadhvi's ''Dhoom 2''. In 2008, she collaborated once again with Abbas-Mustan for ''Race''. She played the role of a woman who is caught in a love-triangle between two brothers. The film was the fourth-biggest hit of the year grossing at the box office. Her first release of 2009 was the box-office failure ''Aa Dekhen Zara''. It was followed by a role in Rituparno Ghosh's ''Shob Charitro Kalponik'', thus making her debut in Bengali cinema. Basu's role as the wife of a "ruthless cop" in the 2010 action-thriller ''Aakrosh''. Basu's sole release in 2011 was ''Dum Maaro Dum'', a moderate success at the box office. She collaborated with Abbas-Mustan for the third time in ''Players'' (2012). Loosely based on ''The Italian Job'', the film was panned by the critics. Her another release of the year ''Raaz 3'', a supernatural horror thriller directed by Bhatt, met with positive response and emerged as a box office success grossing in India.
After making a guest appearance in ''Race 2'', Basu was seen in the psychological horror film ''Aatma''; her performance received mixed reviews. Her subsequent releases include the adventure drama ''The Lovers'' (2013), in which she portrayed the role of a Maratha warrior, and ''Humshakals'' (2014). The latter received negative reviews and came to be regarded as one of the worst films ever made in Indian cinema. Basu's first release of 2015 was the horror film ''Alone'', a remake of the 2007 namesake Thai film. She played dual roles as conjoined twins, thus becoming the first actress in Bollywood to perform such a role.
